How to Renew Your Driving Licence in India (2025)

A driving licence in India is valid for 20 years or until age 50 (whichever is earlier), and must be renewed every 5 years after 50. If your DL is close to expiry — or has already expired — here's everything you need to do.

When Should You Renew?

  • Renewal can be initiated up to 1 year before expiry
  • If expired within the last 5 years: you can still renew with an additional fee
  • If expired more than 5 years ago: you may need to reapply for a fresh DL (treated as new applicant in many states)

Grace period: You have 30 days after expiry before you are technically driving with a lapsed licence. After 30 days, you can be fined.

Documents Required

  • Original Driving Licence (for in-person submission)
  • Application Form LLR (for renewal) — available at RTO or downloadable from Parivahan
  • Form 1A (medical fitness) — self-declared for non-commercial LMV; doctor-signed for commercial or age 40+
  • Passport-sized photographs (4–6)
  • Address proof (if address changed)
  • Age proof

Online Renewal Process (Parivahan)

Step 1

Go to parivahan.gov.in → Driving Licence Related Services → Your State → Renewal of Driving Licence

Step 2

Enter DL number and date of birth → System fetches your existing licence details

Step 3

Verify details, update address if needed → Upload Form 1A (medical certificate)

Step 4

Pay renewal fee online (₹200–400 depending on state and vehicle class)

Step 5

Some states complete renewal fully online and mail the new DL card. Others require one RTO visit for biometric verification.

Step 6

New DL is typically dispatched via Speed Post within 7–30 days depending on state.

Driving After Expiry: Risks

  • Fine: ₹5,000 for driving with expired licence (post 30-day grace)
  • Insurance implications: An accident with an expired licence may void your motor insurance claim — the insurer can reject the claim on grounds of unlicensed driving
  • Third-party liability: If you cause an accident, your expired licence status will complicate legal proceedings

Start the renewal process 30–60 days before expiry to avoid any gap.

Renewing for Senior Drivers (60+ years)

Drivers above 60 must:

  • Submit Form 1A signed by a registered medical practitioner (not self-declared)
  • Renewal period is 5 years (not 20) from age 60 onwards
  • Renewal is required every 5 years for the rest of the time they hold a licence

This is a standard safety measure — not a restriction.

If You Have Multiple Vehicle Classes

Your licence may have LMV-NT + MCWG. Both classes renew together on the same application and payment.
