# E-Challan vs Court Challan in India — Key Differences
When you hear "traffic challan," it could be one of two very different things: an e-challan (electronic challan) or a court challan. The process, fine, and consequences are different for each.
E-Challan (Electronic Challan)
An e-challan is issued:
- By cameras (speed, red light, ANPR)
- By police using handheld devices
- Through the national echallan system
- Shows up on echallan.parivahan.gov.in
- Pay online via UPI/card
- No court appearance required
- No FIR filed
Court Challan
A court challan is issued for:
- Drunk driving
- Rash/dangerous driving causing injury or death
- Racing on roads
- Serious repeat violations
- Any violation where police file a case in court
- FIR is filed at the police station
- The challan is a summons to appear in court
- You must appear (or send a lawyer)
- The magistrate sets the final fine
- Cannot be paid online on the Parivahan portal
- Your DL is usually seized and sent to the licensing authority for suspension
How to Know Which Type You Have
- If it shows on echallan.parivahan.gov.in with a "Pay Now" button → it's an e-challan
- If police physically issued you a paper with a court name and date → court challan
- If your DL was confiscated → court challan
Summary
E-challans are administrative fines — pay online, done. Court challans are criminal proceedings — hire a lawyer, appear in court.
