# No Helmet Challan in India — Fine, Law & How to Pay (2025)
Riding a two-wheeler without a helmet is a ₹1,000 fine under the MV Act 2019. For repeat offences, your licence can be suspended for three months.
The Law
Section 129 of the Motor Vehicles Act makes wearing a helmet mandatory for the rider AND the pillion passenger. Both must wear helmets when the vehicle is in motion.
What Counts as a Valid Helmet
Only ISI-marked (BIS certified) helmets are legally valid. Half-face helmets without a chin strap properly fastened also attract challans in some states.
Fine Amounts
- ₹1,000 for the rider
- ₹1,000 for the pillion (separate challan)
- Repeat offence: licence suspended for 3 months
