Getting a Driving Licence in India: Everything You Need to Know
Getting a driving licence in India involves two main stages: first obtaining a Learner's Licence (LL), and after 30 days, applying for the Permanent Driving Licence (DL). Here's a complete walkthrough.
Step 1: Apply for a Learner's Licence
A Learner's Licence is mandatory before you can drive on Indian roads. You must hold it for a minimum of 30 days before applying for the permanent licence.
Eligibility
- Age: 16 years for motorcycles up to 50cc; 18 years for all other vehicles
- Medical fitness: Basic eye test and health declaration
- No prior criminal record related to traffic violations
Documents Required
- Age proof: Aadhaar card, birth certificate, or passport
- Address proof: Aadhaar card, voter ID, or utility bill
- Passport-sized photographs (6 copies)
- Medical certificate (Form 1A) — can be self-declared for non-commercial vehicles
- Application form (Form 1 and Form 2)
The Process
1. Visit your nearest Regional Transport Office (RTO) or apply online at Parivahan
2. Fill out Form 1 (application) and Form 2 (physical fitness declaration)
3. Submit documents and pay the fee (₹200–₹400 depending on state)
4. Appear for the computer-based written test at the RTO
5. Learner's Licence issued same-day if you pass
The Written Test
The LL test consists of 15–20 multiple choice questions covering:
- Traffic signs and signals
- Road rules and right of way
- Speed limits
- Documents required while driving
Step 2: Practice Driving for 30 Days
After receiving your LL, you must practice driving for a minimum of 30 days before applying for the permanent licence.
Important rules during the learner period:- Always display the "L" board on your vehicle (red L on white background)
- Must be accompanied by a licensed driver at all times
- Cannot drive on expressways or highways without supervision
- Cannot drive at night without a licensed co-driver
This is the perfect time to hire a professional driving trainer. A certified trainer from LearnDrive will teach you:
- Vehicle controls and clutch-brakes coordination
- Lane discipline and mirror usage
- Parallel parking and hill starts
- Navigating traffic and roundabouts
Step 3: Apply for the Permanent Driving Licence
After completing 30 days (and before 180 days from LL issue date), apply for your DL.
Additional Documents for DL
- Learner's Licence (original)
- Address and age proof (same as LL)
- Passport photos
- Fee payment receipt (₹500–₹800 depending on state and vehicle class)
The Driving Test
The RTO road test involves:
1. Vehicle inspection — check lights, horn, mirrors
2. Driving on a test track — figure-8, forward parking, hill start
3. On-road driving — some RTOs now conduct on-road tests
Pass Rate Tips
- Practice at the actual RTO test track at least 2–3 times before your test date
- Many RTOs have YouTube videos of their test track — watch them
- Hire a trainer who has experience taking students to that specific RTO
State-Specific Variations
Common Mistakes to Avoid
1. Not scheduling the slot online — Walk-in queues at RTOs can take all day. Book your slot on Parivahan.gov.in
2. Wrong documents — Always carry originals + photocopies. Self-attested copies are accepted
3. Skipping the L board — You can be fined ₹500+ for driving without the L board
4. Not practicing before the test — The RTO driving test has specific requirements. Practice specifically for those
