# Check Pending Challans Before Buying a Used Car — Must-Do Guide
Buying a used car without checking for pending challans is a classic mistake. In India, challans are linked to the vehicle (not just the owner), which means unpaid fines from the previous owner can block your registration renewal.

When you buy a used car, you take ownership of the vehicle's legal history. Unpaid challans are attached to the vehicle number. If the previous owner ignored ₹20,000 worth of challans, you inherit that problem.
How to Check Before Buying
Step 1: Get the Vehicle Number
Ask the seller for the exact registration number. Verify it matches the RC book.
Step 2: Check on Parivahan
Visit echallan.parivahan.gov.in → "Check Challan Status" → enter the vehicle number.
You'll see all pending challans against that vehicle — violation type, amount, and date.
Step 3: Check Vahan for Other Issues
Also check vahan.parivahan.gov.in:
- RC validity and owner name
- Insurance status
- Fitness certificate (commercial vehicles)
- PUC status
- Any hypothecation (loan) on the vehicle
Step 4: Negotiate on Challans
If challans exist, either:
- Ask the seller to pay them before transfer
- Deduct the challan amount from the purchase price
Step 5: After Purchase
After the RC transfer, recheck the portal. Occasionally challans from the old owner's period continue to show. You can contest these by showing the transfer date.
