# How Long Do You Have to Pay a Traffic Challan in India?
There is no single national deadline for paying an e-challan in India. Unlike some countries, India's MV Act does not prescribe a specific number of days within which an e-challan must be paid before the fine increases. However, consequences accumulate the longer you wait.
Official Position
The Parivahan portal keeps challans in "Pending" status indefinitely. The fine amount does not increase just because time passes (unlike late fees on utility bills). However, repeated non-payment leads to:
1. Vehicle blacklisting (typically after 3+ unpaid challans)
2. RTO service denial (registration renewal, ownership transfer)
3. Court notice for serious violations
E-Challan vs. Court Challan
