Driving in Pune: The Complete 2025 Guide

Pune's transformation from a quiet pensioner's paradise to India's fourth-largest IT hub has brought with it traffic that would have been unimaginable a decade ago. The city's road infrastructure is playing catch-up. Here's how to navigate it effectively.

Pune's Road Structure

PMC vs PCMC Areas

Pune is split between:

  • PMC (Pune Municipal Corporation): Core Pune — Shivajinagar, Deccan, Kothrud, Hadapsar
  • PCMC (Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation): Hinjewadi, Chinchwad, Pimpri, Dehu Road

Both have their own traffic enforcement and road jurisdiction. Rules are the same (Motor Vehicles Act) but enforcement character differs.

Key Routes

Hinjewadi IT corridor:

Home to Infosys, Wipro, TCS, and 100+ tech companies. 8–10 AM and 6–8 PM traffic is severe — 10 km can take 45–60 minutes. IT workers who drive to Hinjewadi know to leave by 7:30 AM or after 8:30 PM.

Baner-Aundh:

The premium residential-commercial strip. Heavy traffic 8 AM–10 PM. Multiple one-ways — navigation app is mandatory.

Pune-Mumbai Expressway (NH48):

India's first modern expressway and still one of the best. 94 km, Pune to Khopoli. Speed limit 120 km/h. Heavy rain and fog near the ghats (Khandala-Lonavala) — mandatory headlights and reduced speed in this section.

Pune's Unique Traffic Quirks

The Ghat Roads

Pune is surrounded by the Sahyadri ranges. Roads to Lavasa, Tamhini Ghat, and Malshej Ghat are narrow, winding mountain roads — absolutely not beginner territory. Wait until you have 6+ months of driving experience.

Two-Wheeler Dominance

Pune has an extraordinarily high two-wheeler density. In narrow Deccan/FC Road areas, bikes outnumber cars 10:1. Always check your blind spots carefully — a motorcycle can appear in a gap that seemed clear 2 seconds ago.

The Pune Signal Culture

Pune drivers are notoriously impatient at signals. Honking begins approximately 0.3 seconds after a light turns green. Ignore it — move when you are ready to move safely, not when horns demand.

PMC Parking Rules

  • Yellow-line roads: No parking, zero tolerance, towing common
  • Blue zone parking: PMC pay-and-park areas around FC Road, MG Road, Camp area — ₹20–40/hour
  • Mall and commercial complex parking: ₹40–80/hour in most areas
  • Hinjewadi tech parks: Shuttle services from Wakad/Hinjewadi Phase 1 — use them instead of driving into the park if you can

Driving to Mahabaleshwar / Panchgani (Weekend Trip Common)

This is one of the most popular weekend drives from Pune.

  • Distance: ~120 km, 3–4 hours
  • Route: Pune → Satara Road → Panchgani → Mahabaleshwar
  • Road quality: Good until Panchgani, then narrow tourist roads
  • Tip: Go early (leave 6 AM) to avoid tourist traffic gridlock on return Sunday evening

Pune RTO Information

  • RTO Pune (PMC area): Located near Hadapsar — handles core Pune registration
  • RTO Pimpri: For Pimpri-Chinchwad, Hinjewadi area
  • RTO Kothrud (new): Handles western Pune suburbs
