Car Safety Features Every Driver Should Understand
Modern cars come loaded with safety features — but most people don't actually understand what they do or how to use them. Here's a clear breakdown of what matters, what works, and what you should prioritize.
Non-Negotiable Safety Features (Baseline)
Airbags
Airbags inflate in milliseconds on severe impact to cushion you from the steering wheel, dashboard, and windows. They work with seatbelts — not instead of them.
What to know:- A front airbag without a seatbelt can actually injure you (it hits at 300 km/h)
- Always wear seatbelt first
- Dual front airbags (driver + passenger) are the minimum — look for side airbags too
- Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara, Tata Nexon, and Hyundai i20 offer 6 airbags in base/mid variants
ABS (Anti-lock Braking System)
In panic braking, ABS prevents wheels from locking up and skidding — keeping steering control. Without ABS, hard braking on wet roads causes the car to slide straight even as you turn.
What to know:- ABS is now mandatory in all new Indian cars
- If you feel the brake pedal pulsing/vibrating during hard braking, that's ABS working correctly — hold the brake firmly
- Do not pump the brakes — that defeats ABS
EBD (Electronic Brake Distribution)
Works with ABS to distribute braking force between front and rear wheels based on load. You don't interact with it — it just works.
Rear Seatbelts
Rear passengers without seatbelts become projectiles in a crash. Always insist all passengers buckle up before moving. This is law (₹1,000 fine per person) and it saves lives.
Active Safety Features (Driver-Assist)
Reverse Camera
Shows what's behind you when reversing. Essential for parking in tight spaces and avoiding children/obstacles behind the car. Most cars above ₹8 lakh now include this.
Use it properly: The camera has a wide-angle distorted view — objects closer than they appear. Use camera AND mirrors AND physically look back.Parking Sensors (PDC)
Audible beeps that increase in frequency as you approach an obstacle. Front and rear sensors together are ideal.
ESP / ESC (Electronic Stability Control)
Detects when the car is sliding or spinning out of control and applies individual wheel brakes to bring it back on course. Especially valuable in wet conditions and on mountain roads. Mandatory in new cars.
Advanced Features (Mid to High-End Segment)
ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance System)
Umbrella term for features like:
- Lane Keep Assist — warns or corrects if you drift out of lane
- Forward Collision Warning — alerts if you're closing too fast on the car ahead
- Automatic Emergency Braking — brakes automatically if collision is imminent
- Blind Spot Monitor — alerts when a vehicle is in your blind spot
Available in: Tata Nexon (mid-upper variants), Kia Seltos, Hyundai Creta, MG Astor
Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS)
Alerts you if any tyre pressure drops dangerously low. An underinflated tyre is 3x more likely to blow out at highway speed.
